Beauty queens by Ken Sprague

Here’s a reminder that it isn’t always winter in the Central Adirondacks. These attractive young women were contestants in the Miss Central Adirondacks Contest, a popular summer attraction in the 1940s sponsored by the Central Adirondack Association.

The driving force behind the event was Pitt Smith, owner/manager of The Seventh Lake House, a hotel located across the lake from today’s Seventh Lake House Restaurant.

The contestants were sponsored by area hotels, and the judging took place at the Gaiety Theater in Inlet where owner Mendel Schulman was the host. Following the judging event, the newly crowned Miss Central Adirondacks and her court, plus the contest judges, joined a flotilla that took them around Fourth Lake.

This photograph from the Town of Webb Historical Association includes the names of some of the judges of this particular contest, but doesn’t identify any of the contestants. The judges from left are: unknown, Pete Rivette, unknown, Herb Daiker, Don Case and Pitt Smith.
