Setting it straight

Last week, in an article about the Webb town council, John Mitchell was incorrectly identified as John Murphy. Mitchell has accepted the position of chief operator at the town’s wastewater treatment plant. He has served as assistant operator at the plant since 2006.

Photography exhibit  discussion slated

John Radigan, Director of the Adirondack Photography Institute, will lead an informal group discussion at View on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. about selected works in the two photography exhibitions, “Adirondack View Finders” which includes work by Nathan Farb, Nancy Battaglia, Mark Bowie, Carl Heilman II, Johnathan A. Esper, Lesley Dixon, and Clark Lubbs, as well as “Teachers Turn: Instructors of the Adirondack Photography Institute”, which includes examples of John’s work as well as that of Eric Dresser, Joe Lefevre, and Carl Rubino.

This discussion is complimentary with exhibition admission, which is $10 for non-members and $5 for members and groups of six or more, and free for Children under 12.

“Adirondack View Finders” will be displayed until March 3. Stone sculptor Matt Horner has work concurrently displayed. “Teachers Turn” will be on display until 4 p.m. on Jan. 29, the day of the discussion.

Board of education meeting capsule

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The board took the following action:

Approved the Committee on Special Education recommendations.

Accepted the resignation of George Villiere, attorney, effective immediately.

Appointed Bryce Weedmark as a substitute teacher.

Approved the request from Central Adirondack Association for the use of buses and drivers for Snofest on March 10.

Approved the Graduate Credit Increase for Thomas Finnerty .5FTE Technology Integration Specialist.

Appointed Caitlin Goodwin as Teacher Aide.

Approved the tuition contract with Inlet Common School for 2012-13.

Approved the transportation and support services contract with Inlet Common School for 2012-13.

Approved the revisions to Board Policies 301.2 - Employment of Relatives of Employees and 315.2-Family and Medical Leave.

Accepted a bid on the surplus Magic Chef Refrigerator from David Leach.

Approved the revised Board Policies 301.2 - Employment of Relatives of Employees and 315.2-Family and Medical Leave.

Established a special Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. for the purpose of budget discussion.

Special topics of discussion were:

Pre-K Discussion was advertised in the newspaper and many people from the Kinderwood board, parents, and community members expressed their ideas regarding a school based Pre-K program versus a private program.

Discussed the need for an interim principal and advertising for the principal’s position.

Request for proposal for professional auditing services for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m.

CAP-21 announces board members

Tim Foley has been elected as CAP-21 board president for 2012, taking the reins from Sandy Booton, who will continue as vice president, with Carolyn Trimbach as treasurer and Page Hannah as secretary. The board has also approved three new members:

Elise Carlson, is events director at View and brings her experience in events marketing, coordinating program events, providing customer service and video production skills;

Mike Cunningham is an english teacher for the Town of Webb Union Free School District, serves on Cornell Cooperative Extension for Herkimer County, is president of the Town of Webb Scholarship Fund, and brings a focus on youth concerns;

Mike Farmer is director of the Town of Webb Tourism and Publicity Department and is a board member of the Central Adirondack Association (CAA) and the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) and brings a focus on supporting economic revitalization through tourism.

Hist. assoc. starts membership drive

The Town of Webb Historical Association has announced the start of its membership drive for 2012.  The association has four buildings that it maintains, one of which houses the Goodsell Museum across the street from the Old Forge Post Office on State Route 28. The museum is open to the public at no charge Tuesday-Saturday, year round and, in addition to its normal displays, it is currently running an exhibit on medicine and our health care professionals from the early 1890s to present day.
