Camp signs stolen

Tuesday, June 05, 2012 - Updated: 11:48 AM

Over Memorial Day weekend, many camp owners in the area made the discovery that their camp signs were missing.

According to Terry Bauer, who has a home on South Shore Road, his sign disappeared on the evening of Saturday, May 26.

He had just had the sign made and had hung it up just the day before. He first realized it was gone when his daughter arrived for a visit and asked him why he took his new sign down.

He hadn’t taken the sign down, but it was definitely missing.

Bauer had hung his new sign, which read “Camp Kokopelli” when he arrived Friday afternoon to spend the holiday weekend at his camp.

He had just had the new redwood sign made, with sandblasted letters and special reflective paint so he could find his driveway in the dark. He said the sign cost $1,500, but it wasn’t the money that upset him.

“The money is one thing, but I just felt violated,” said Bauer. “You’d expect something like this to happen in the bigger cities, but not up there.”

Bauer reported the missing sign to the Town of Webb Police, who paid him a visit to gather more information. After receiving several more reports of signs gone missing in the area, police returned to investigate further.

Bauer said that he stopped at the police station before leaving town on Tuesday, May 29, and they told him that they had still not found his sign, but had located his neighbor’s sign and a few others in a gully.

Webb Police Chief John Russell could not be reached for comment.
