The Old Forge community and visitors are cordially invited to the Fellowship Hall of Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church from 8 to 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 10, and after services from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for the third summertime Alternative Marketplace. Only fair trade products are sold at the Marketplace.

While there, you may write a letter to your senator and representative for Niccolls’ Offering of Letters which helps encourage government policies that reduce hunger. Information on hunger issues and sample letters will be available so that we can communicate our thoughts to our representatives. Children are also encouraged to participate in this project.

The Alternative Marketplace offers a range of Fair Trade items which assure small farmers and artisans fair compensation for their work. There will be beautiful crafts from India, Nepal, and Indonesia. Decorative items include table runners, aprons, wind chimes, and herb planters. Equal Exchange coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate and fruit bars will also be available.

Unusual necklaces, bracelets, and earrings from Peru, Kenya, and Swaziland will be there, as well as a new supply of beads from Uganda. Many beautiful scarves made of silk or cotton, and over the shoulder and hand bags for summer toting will be available.

As you read about the troubles many people who live in third world countries face, you may feel there is little you can do to change the world. However, buying Fair Trade items is one way hard-working individuals are helped by giving them a market for their products. This is a chance to shop and make a world of difference at the same time.  Your purchase of fairly traded handcrafts or foods will help create empowerment, opportunity, and employment for artisans and farmers in many countries around the world.
