Town of Webb Health Center transition is making progress

Tuesday, August 28, 2012 - Updated: 11:48 AM

There have been numerous behind-the-scenes activities associated with the transition of the Town of Webb Health Center from town sponsorship to that of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. A number of residents have asked for an update on progress.

A Certificate of Need was filed with the New York State Department of Health and is currently being reviewed. The transition cannot be accomplished until the State has approved the project. It is fully anticipated that the project will be approved.

St. Elizabeth and the Town of Webb have agreed to and signed a 15-year lease for the Health Center’s office space. The lease will become effective once the state has approved the project and inspected the building.

A plan for renovations has been completed. The plan will divide the office space into two separate areas to accommodate the Health Center and the Dental practice. The renovations will accommodate a number of needs for the office. First, it will address increased work space for the nursing staff, provide for two handicap-accessible restrooms for patients and visitors, and improve the current heating and air conditioning systems. New York State has to approve the renovation plans.  St. Elizabeth hopes to announce a construction start date soon.

The Medical Center has begun a nationwide search for two family medicine physicians to work full time in the office.

There has been some interest and one candidate is considering an offer. St. Elizabeth representatives have met with the Town of Webb Health Care Fund members, who have reconfirmed their commitment to help recruit physicians.

Dr. Webster is committed to working full time for the remainder of this year and into 2013, as needed. St. Elizabeth appreciates his support and dedication to the Health Center.

Medical Center administration expects that the existing staff members will become Medical Center employees.

Transition of their employment will start once state approval is received. The lab service and employee will also be continued and that transition is expected to start on Sept. 17.

“The process for the transition is, unfortunately, a long one, requiring a number of steps and approvals,” said Robert C. Scholefield, Chief Operating Officer at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.  “As we reach success on these steps, I will keep the Board and the Center staff informed and provide updates to the community.  Support from the public has been overwhelming and St. Elizabeth looks forward to a long, successful relationship.”
