A bright orange roof tops the former Howard Johnson’s building in the heart of Old Forge.

Bob Card, who owns and operates the Strand Theatre with his wife, Helen Zyma, has been working on restoring the former Howard Johnson’s building that they purchased about a year and half ago. The building was initially constructed as a Howard’s Johnson’s restaurant, opening in 1959.

Card says the roof color is part of the original color scheme used in the chain of restaurants, but the rest of the building will be painted in a color scheme of Card’s choosing.

He says he’s still playing around with the colors, and is leaning towards hues of lime, orange, purple and aqua.

While the weather is still suitable, Card plans to get as much of the exterior of the building finished as possible. Once the winter months arrive, he will head indoors and work on the interior of the building.

He anticipates splitting the interior into two or three spaces. He has a number of renters who have shown interest in the space, but he doesn’t have anything specific lined up yet. “We have an idea of what we want to see and don’t want to see there, but we don’t have anything solid yet,” said Card.

He plans to have the space ready for tenants so they can open for business by next spring or summer.
