Ruth H. Lindsay

May 30, 2012

 

Ruth H. (Hoch) Lindsay, 99, of Middle Branch Road, widow of Joseph E., passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital, New Hartford. Prior to entering the hospital, Mrs. Lindsay was a resident at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville.

Ruth was born in Rochester, on August 10, 1912, a daughter of Paul and Emma Ortman Hoch. She grew up in Old Forge, where she completed her education at Town of Webb High School. On June 26, 1932, Ruth was united in marriage with Joseph E. Lindsay, and after that the couple lived in Old Forge. Mr. Lindsay, an Adirondack logger and area golf course constructor, died on January 20, 1991.

For many years Mrs. Lindsay was employed as a telephone operator at General Telephone Company of Old Forge. Later she was employed for 25 years as a clerk at George’s Liquor Store, Old Forge.

Mrs. Lindsay was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Old Forge, the Old Forge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and she greatly enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Ruth is survived by two daughters, Judy (John) Chapman, Rocksprings, Wyo. and Myrna L. Hall,  (Wilfred Hall, deceased) Old Forge; seven grandchildren, Joan Tormey and husband, Tony; Susan Beckingham, Scott L. Hall and friend; Kimberly Dale Anne Jones and husband, Peter; Beth Chapman Smith and husband; Fred, Jennifer Lloyd and husband, Michael; David Chapman and wife, Cheryl; twelve great-grandchildren, Karl Tormey and wife, Nia; Jeffery Beckingham and wife, Tara; Shane Beckingham and friend, Jennifer; Whitney Beckingham and friend, David; Audrey, Lydia and Allison Jones; Maura, Asnica and Woody Lloyd; Blake Chapman and Lindsay Chapman; three great great grandchildren, Cole Tormey, Austin Beckingham and Devin DeRosia.

A prayer service will be Thursday, June 7, at 9:15 a.m. at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams and Edmunds Funeral Home 128 Fern Ave. Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated 10 a.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Old Forge.

Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Old Forge. Calling hours are Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sherman R. Parsons

May 25, 2012

Sherman R. Parsons, 78, formerly of Old Forge and Newark Valley, NY went home to be with his Lord on Friday.  

Sherm retired from IBM Owego in 1990 following 30 years of service as an electrical engineer. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, backpacking,  fishing, and was a talented wood carver. He was an active member and Deacon of Skyline Baptist Church in Rome, NY. He was also a US Air force veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Shirley Arnold; sons, Steven (Karen); Shawn (Janele); and Scott (Kerry) Parsons; brother Lynn Parsons; sister, Gail Stauble; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services were Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church, 17 Oneida River Road, Pennellville.

Bruce Wood Putney

May 20, 2012

Bruce Wood Putney, born on May 6, 1925, passed away on May 20, 2012, in Alton, N.H.

Bruce grew up in Woodgate, NY and attended Remsen High School. He was a long time member of the White Otter Fish and Game Club, and enjoyed visiting the area when his busy schedule would allow.

After serving as a pilot in the R.C.A.F. and the US Navy during World War II, he graduated from Parks College with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Bruce then went on to a long career as a pilot for Eastern Airlines, starting as a co-pilot in the twin engine propeller driven DC-3 and finishing in the captain’s seat of the wide body L-1011 jet airliner in 1985. Bruce and Jan raised three children in Lynnfield, Mass. before retiring to Wolfeboro, N.H. and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He was recently awarded a master’s certificate by the FAA for his many years of safe flying and his service to the aviation community. Throughout his life, he enjoyed helping family, neighbors, friends and others as a volunteer with the Air Line Pilots Association, the Boy Scouts, the Civil Air Patrol, the East Alton Fire Association, the Wright Museum, the Huggins Hospital Fair, and the Alton railroad park, among them. He will be missed by his family and friends every day.   

He was the husband of Janice Perkins Putney and father of Claudia Putney of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Lt. Col. Douglas R. Putney (USAF ret.) of San Antonio, Texas, and Duncan B. Putney of Providence, R.I.  

He leaves behind several cousins and friends in the Woodgate/Remsen area.

Richard Turpin

Funeral Mass

A funeral Mass will be held for Richard Turpin at 11 a.m. on June 9, at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Old Forge.

Richard L. “Pick”  Turpin, 93, died peacefully Friday evening, March 16, 2012 at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home. Born on March 10, 1919, in Big Moose, he was the son of Oliver and Flora (Marleau) Turpin. He was a graduate of the Town of Webb High School.
