Vera L. O’Brien
June 14, 2011


Vera L. O’Brien, formerly of Lake Side Terrace on South Shore Road, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, where she had been a resident since October, 2010.  
Vera was born in Far Rockaway (Borough of Queens) NY, on May 5, 1925, a daughter of Leland and Irene Kessler Schmeelk. She grew up in Far Rockaway, where she graduated from high school. On January 5, 1944, she married William Francis O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien, a WWII Navy Veteran, and electrician for Long Island Lighting Co., died on February 11, 1964.  Mrs. O’Brien moved from Bellmore, L.I. to Old Forge in 2005.
She was of the Catholic Faith, and had a great love for animals of all kinds. Especially Boomer for whom she dog sat and her granddogs Abbie, Gwenna and Molly.
Vera is survived by one daughter and son in law, Catherine and Peter Webster, Sr. Eagle Bay; one son and daughter in law, William and Vivian O’Brien, Melbourne, Fla.; two grandchildren, Peter Webster, Jr., and his wife, Jackie, Boonville; Keith and Jennifer O’Brien, West Palm, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Nicole, Peter, Patrick, Christopher and Elanor, one great-great-granddaughter, Tessa. She was predeceased by a great-grandson, Kevin Webster, on June 5, 1998, and by a brother, William Schmeelk.
Her family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Leona Smith and her other friends at Lake Side Terrace for the loving care they gave to Vera. Her family also acknowledges with sincere thanks and appreciation to HASCA, the staff of C-wing at Sunset Nursing Home for the compassionate care they rendered to Vera, to Dr. Thomas Socash and staff at the Old Forge Medical Center and to the Old Forge Ambulance Co.    
The family will be remembering Vera with a memorial Mass at a future time. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
