Betty Barnum

June 19, 2012

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Barnum, 89 of Big Moose, passed away peacefully at Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville on Tuesday, June 19.

Betty was born in Rochester to Byron and Jenifer Bulman and resided in Fairport, N.Y. for her young life until graduating from Fairport High School in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart, Barney, after graduation and then worked for Rochester General Hospital until they moved to Big Moose in 1950.

Betty was a past Matron and long-standing member of the Dewey Old Forge Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

In Big Moose, she was a member of the Big Moose Community Chapel, serving on the Board of Directors for 27 years; she served on various committees for the chapel, especially devoting  her time to the outreach program. Betty was the first female member of the Big Moose Fire Department, a member of the first EMT class, first female ambulance driver and president of the Ambulance Corps, a member and former president of the women’s Jolly Mooser organization. Also to her merit and pleasure, she was quite the fisher lady, once proudly catching a 3-1/2 pound , 21 inch record brook trout in Big Moose Lake. In season, she hunted, fished and helped Barney trap daily. Knowing the call of every bird and having taken ornithology courses from Cornell University, Betty was the best yearly candidate for reporting for Region Five on birds. She and Barney did the bird survey yearly in June.

Betty and Barney owned and operated the Lake View Lodge in Big Moose for several years, and then the Big Moose Inn. While there, they moved to Dart’s Lake (YMCA Camp) where Barney worked for many years until retirement while he and Betty also “nurtured” many young friends and lovingly rehabilitated wildlife.

Betty enjoyed hiking in the woods, bird watching, traveling, golfing, sitting in the sun, and spending time with friends. She was a great cook, loved shopping and always was a fashionably dressed gal. A woman of honor at heart, Betty was above all a very loving and dedicated wife and friend. Some may remember her by her larger-than-life love for animals. She was a deeply private woman who was most passionate about the woods, waters, and mountains. Betty was admired and loved by many.

She is survived by her devoted husband LG “Barney” Barnum of 67 years, and by her nephew Robert Anderson of Oneonta, N.Y.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Big Moose Community Chapel. Betty will rest in peace at the columbarium of the of the Big Moose Chapel should you wish to visit.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Big Moose Ambulance Fund, Eagle Bay, NY 13331.
