William Stanley (Halcrow) Pilgrim
August 1, 2010

After valiant efforts to overcome Parkinson’s Disease, Bill Pilgrim died on Aug. 1, in Seminole, Florida. He was born on June 18, 1921 in The Pas, Manitoba Canada. He joined his family in the United States in 1929. He graduated from Cortland High School. Following graduation he worked at Porter Cable and also in the engineering department of Edlund’s Machine Company. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Vormwald on Friday, Nov. 13, 1942. In 1944, he joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific as a tail-gunner on a PBM aircraft.
In 1950, he and his wife Betty moved their family to Port Byron, N.Y. Over the years, they lovingly renovated their historic brick home. Bill was a member of the Port Byron Central School Board of Education for 10 years. He was a member and trustee of the Port Byron Methodist Church, a member of the Young Adult Fellowship and was on the building committee that designed the ‘new’ church on South Street. He was a Mason, a charter member of the Port Byron Lion’s Club (the tail-twister), a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the American Legion. He proudly volunteered in the Port Byron Fire Department. He also enjoyed camping with his family.
Most of his career (more than 20 years) was spent designing medical and surgical instruments for Welch Allyn in Skaneateles Falls. He holds many patents and in 2006 was installed as an inaugural member of the Welch Allyn Hall of Fame.
He and Betty purchased a small cabin in the Adirondacks in 1966. They spent weekends and vacations improving their ‘getaway’ into a lovely refuge. Hiking, golfing on the famed Thendara course, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing enhanced their mountain times. They also enjoyed traveling – cruising, railroad trips and RV treks. Following their retirement they became ‘snow-birds’ splitting their time between the Florida Gulf Coast and Town of Webb.
Bill is survived by his wife Doris Pilgrim with whom he shared seventeen happy years. He is also survived by his four daughters: Joni (Dewey) Lincoln of Conquest, Suanne Hopkins (Mark Delaney) of Marietta, N.Y., Andrea (John) Seamans of Port Byron and Laraine (Gary) Miller of West Virginia. He was the proud grandfather of nine: Mark (Michele), Scott (Gabby Otvos), Kristina, and Becky Lincoln; Michael (Cindy) Weber, Amy (Todd) Sukena, Glen (Jane) Seamans, Beth (Dan) White, and Heidi (Steve) Banko. Extending this active family are ten great-grandchildren. Also mourning his loss are his devoted sister Margaret Hutchinson of Oswego, many nieces, nephews and cousins, Doris’ daughter Susan and son-in-law Gary Eberle of Toronto, Ontario Canada, their three sons and a great-grand-daughter.
Bill was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth (Betty) Vormwald Pilgrim, his parents William Charles and Lillian Viola Pilgrim, brother Joseph (Helen) Pilgrim, and sister Doreen DiCirce.
Friends and family are invited to share memories as we celebrate the life of this remarkable man. A memory block has been placed in his honor at Veterans Park on Genesee Street in Auburn. A memorial service will be held at the Port Byron First United Methodist Church on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. Donations may be made to the Organ Fund of the church, National Parkinson Foundation, or to the Arts Center/Old Forge.
