Roger Perkins
November 29, 2011


Roger W. Perkins, “Perk,” age 63, of Brushton passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Roger was born on March 29, 1948 in Malone, N.Y. Roger attended Brushton-Moira Central School, where he played basketball and baseball. He was united in marriage to Beverly Scharf on April 17, 1965 at the Methodist Church in Brasher Falls.
Roger drove truck prior to taking a position as a caretaker for the Big Wolf Lake Association, a private park in Tupper Lake, where he worked for six years. Roger then moved to Old Forge, where he worked as a lodge manager at the Bisby Lodge for the Adirondack League Club. He lived and worked there for 24 wonderful years until his retirement in June of 2009. As a young adult, Roger was a member of the Moira Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Roger was an avid outdoorsman with a special love for hunting and fishing. He cherished his time at his hunting camp (Little Bisby Lodge) with his family and friends. Roger enjoyed baseball and especially watching his grandchildren play.
Roger was predeceased by his daughter, Heidi Perkins, on June 1, 1986 and his mother, Ethel (Fletcher) Perkins on December 3, 1997.
Roger is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Beverly (Scharf) Perkins of Brushton; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy (Perkins) Young and Raymond (Trey) Young of Brushton; son and daughter-in-law, Darrin and Lynn (Dominy) Perkins of Winthrop, NY; seven grandchildren, Nicole Young of Rochester; Devin Young of Brushton; Brandon Young of Brushton; Kolby Perkins of Winthrop; Hayden Perkins of Winthrop; Jayde Young of Brushton and Hailey Young of Brushton. He is also survived by his father and spouse, Robert Perkins and Sally (Moore) Perkins of Malone, NY; sister and brother-in-law, Carla (Perkins) and Jerry Tew and their two sons of Missouri; and a special aunt and uncle, Ted and Joyce Fletcher of Moira.
Friends and family were invited to call at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira, NY on Saturday, Dec. 3. Burial took place on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the Sandhill Cemetery, in Dickinson, NY, it was followed by a celebration of life with Rev. William Saxton officiating.

Leona Smith
November 26, 2011


Leona E. Smith, 85, of South Shore Road, died Nov. 26, at her residence with her family by her side.
She was born March 6, 1926, in Tupper Lake, a daughter of Edward and Lucy (Boulier) Brown, and received her education in Town of Webb schools. In May 1956 she married Rufus M. Smith. The couple made their home in Old Forge.
Leona had worked at the former Band Box Restaurant in Old Forge. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church and the Old Forge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, embroidery and needlepoint.
Survivors include two sons, Chad Smith and his wife, Kathy, of Old Forge and Rich Girou of Remsen; two daughters, Lucille Walker of Old Forge, and Barbara Bailey and her husband, Bill, of Okla.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters, Gloria Bolton, Pauline Burdick, Helen Cichocki, and Nancy Hull; and Boomer, her loving canine companion. She was predeceased by her husband, Rufus; a son, Edward Girou; and a brother and sister.
The family would like to thank HASCA, the Old Forge Fire Department, and Hospice and Palliative Care for the kind and considerate care and attention given to Leona.
Graveside services at Riverview Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
