Police Report - 08/16/2011

Tickets issued for feeding deer

During July, seven people were charged in the Old Forge area with violating the statewide ban on feeding deer. In an effort to curb this illegal activity, Environmental Conservation Officer Russell Ritzel has pro-actively patrolled, and at times conducted stationary surveillance of areas in Old Forge where tourists attempt to feed deer by hand.

Feeding deer is not only illegal, but it is a dangerous activity. White-tailed deer are wild animals and should never be enticed to eat out of human hands. This is not natural behavior for deer and can cause them to lose their fear of humans. This behavior endangers both the people and the deer. The hand-feeding of the deer often takes place on or near a public roadway, which can result in the deer becoming a hazard to motorists and pedestrians.

The following subjects were issued tickets for feeding wild deer:

• Erica L. Torchia of Frankfort, was ticketed for feeding deer white bread from her motor vehicle on South Shore Road.

• Barry L. Arnold of Rochester, was ticketed for feeding deer a bag of bread from his motor vehicle on South Shore Road.

• Greg P. Wedyck of Baldwinsville, was ticketed for feeding deer marshmallows on Park Avenue.

• Paul E. Barclay of Victor, was ticketed for feeding deer carrots on Beechwalk Road.

• Ray H. Reynolds of Moravia, was ticketed for feeding deer crackers in a parking area off Route 28 in the Old Forge business area.

• Matthew E. Kalvaitis of Mooers, was ticketed for feeding deer animal crackers in a parking area off Route 28 in the Old Forge business area.

• Nicole Adam of Cortland, was ticketed for feeding deer apples from a motor vehicle on South Shore Road.

The tickets are all returnable to the Town of Webb Justice Court. The deer feeding charge carries a fine with a maximum of $250 dollars and/or a maximum of 15 days in jail, plus a mandatory $75 surcharge.

Title: FROM A WINTER VISITOR

I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS POST RE FEEDING THE DEER. I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS AGAINST THE LAW AND I AM VERY SURE THAT MOST VISITORS TO THIS AREA, FROM THE CITIES, ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS LAW. COMING FROM THE CITY IT IIS UNIQUE TO SEE THE DEER COME UP TO A PERSON LOOKING TO BE FED . THERE SHOULD BE HUGE SIGNS AND POSTERS ALL AROUND TOWN AND ON THE WAY INTO TOWN BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS LAW. FINING TOURISTS AND PLACING THEIR NAMES IN THE LOCAL PAPER IS A SURE WAY TO DIMINISH YOUR TOURIST POPULATION. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO PISS OFF VISITORS. THIS TOWN WILL DIE WITHOUT THE TOURISTS. IT IS MARTIN LUTHER WKD AND THE TOWN IS LIKE A GHOST TOWN DO TO LACK OF SNOW - THAT IS BAD ENOUGH WITHOUT THE POLICE AND PARK RANGERS GIVING OUT TICKETS TO THE FEW VISITORS THAT ARE COMING INTO TOWN. THE DWI AND NO REGISTRATIONS FOR SNOWMOBILES IS JUSTIFIED - BUT FEEDING THE DEER ??? I THINK THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY TO DEAL WITH THAT PROBLEM THAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER FOR ALL THE BUSINESSES IN THIS LOVELY TOWN. IT IS A PERFECT VACATION SPOT BOTH SUMMER AND WINTER . PLEASE DON'T SCARE THE VISITORS AWAY !!

Title: Vistors return to Old Forge

Kudos to JC for his Post on feeding deer in Old Forge. The Town Fathers, or should I say the Town Council should read the Post and take it under consideration.

Title: I wonder how soon those visitors will return to Old Forge?

This is all 'perfectly legal' of course, but it seems like a warning and education could be provided to first time offenders, rather than costly tickets? Not everyone is aware of those regulations. And no, I don't feed deer, nor have I been ticketed for the offense. But with the economy in the toilet, and tourism declining, it seems a bit penny-wise and pound-foolish to be slapping visitors in a TOURISM-DEPENDENT AREA like Old Forge with hefty fines, and publishing their names like common criminals on the police blotter.
