Take a Sabbath walk at Niccolls

The community is invited to take a Sabbath Walk with John Muir at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5 in the sanctuary at Niccolls Church in Old Forge.

The congregation of Niccolls Church has the practice of going for a Sabbath Walk on the first Sunday of the summer months.

For the final Sabbath Walk of 2010, Dr. Richard Shore will take walkers on the extraordinary adventure of John Muir’s life from his Scottish boyhood to the 1,000 mile walk and beyond.

Dr. Shore has brought the legacy of John Muir to life for over 20 years and to more than 31,000 people across the United States.

Born in the shadow of John Muir’s beloved Sierra Nevada, Dr. Shore now summers at his camp on Big Moose Lake.

According to Pastor Lawrence Bartel, “this spiritual practice opens us up to walk prayerfully over this holy land with an open heart, mind, and soul.” Pastor Bartel said, “Dick loves to saunter over these mountains and paddle these waters. This spectrum of personal experience offers our congregation the remarkable opportunity to reflect on our Adirondack context, our time, and our call to be engaged caretakers of God’s creation. John Muir, perhaps more than any other American, gave us a new lens with which many Americans view God’s creation, particularly wilderness.”

This Sabbath Walk is open to the community. Previous Sabbath Walk destinations have included Lock and Dam, Cathedral Pines, and Ferd’s Bog, as well as a Sabbath Paddle on the Moose River to Lock and Dam.
