Girls Track

The three girls who qualified for the state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse on Thursday, June 1, all took part in the competition and all turned in good performances. Caitlin Bailey, Lauren Holt and Maddie Phaneuf all took part in the meet. Bailey turned in a near record breaking performance in the high hurdles as she ran a 16.60 in the preliminaries. That run got her into the final run and she then ran a 16.67 to place high but, not quite good enough to make it to the states. Holt, competing in the pentathlon for only the second time in her track career, nearly matched her record breaking performance last week in the sectionals. Her 1875 points was only three points off her record. Phaneuf ran in her specialty, the 1500 meter run, an event in which she lowered her own school record by nine seconds last week, nearly did it again as she ran a 4:58.54 to finish third overall.

None of the girls made it to the states this week, but, they all took part and performed very well.

Girls modified softball

The girls’ modified softball team closed out their home portion of their schedule with a doubleheader against Dolgeville last Wednesday, May 23.

The team won the first game 18-14, another high scoring game in which our team had some key hits, very aggressive base running and even turned in a double play in the field. Sandie Delmarsh, Ally Cooper, Melissa Rockhill and Emily Hoffman all had RBI’s for the team with Hoffman getting credit for four on one hit in the second inning that cleared the loaded bases. Kalyn Olney and Madison Rice each had a double. It was another total team victory as 12 of the 16 players scored runs.

Mara Gaffney and Hoffman divided the pitching duties.

The second game was not even close as Old Forge dominated the game on the way to a 17-4 victory. Rice and Rockhill were the pitchers in this contest and both did a very fine job.

Rockhill had a double and RBI’s were driven in by Montana Burrell, Gaffney and Briana Brownsell.

Friday, May 25, the team played their last game of the year at Oriskany and ended up losing a heart breaker, 17-16. It was a tough way to end the season after such a great year. The team ended its season with a fine 8-3 record and when they look back at the season, this last one-run loss will not be so important.

Rice and Rockhill had extra-base hits to lead the offense. However, errors made in the last two innings of play were the difference as Oriskany came from behind, thanks to those errors, and registered their victory on unearned runs.

Coach Kristin Ehrensbeck Armendola and her entire team should be congratulated and proud of their fine season.

Varsity golf

After failing in his quest to move on to the states in golf, Colin Criss teamed up with Lexie Haehl  for the last competition of the year at Clinton last Friday, June 2. The competition was the Center State Conference medalist tournament held on the fine Skenandoa Golf Course, a par 72 course. Two players from each of the 20 schools in the CSC who play golf, team up and see who wins the team competition over the 18 hole course. The only time that Old Forge has ever won this competition was back in 2004 when Rick Sutton and Jesse Isensee teamed up to score a 152 to win. It was the fourth best score ever turned in by a team in this competition since they started this event back in the 1990’s. While the competition determines who wins the team competition, there also is an individual competition going on to see who the top player in the CSC turns out to be.

Bobby Davenport, a ninth grader at West Canada Valley, turned in a fine 75 score and won the individual championship. Sauquoit Valley won the team competition with the team posting a score of 160. Old Forge did not fare as well as the Criss-Haehl team posted a score of 192 to place 16th. Individually, Criss tied for tenth with a score of 85.

So ends another fine season under their coach, John “Louie” Ehrensbeck and his able assistant, Don Haehl. They did not have the year that they had last year, but, they still ended up tied for first place and co-champions with Remsen for the North Division of the CSC.
