Bass tournament winners announced

The Old Forge Fire Department’s “Almost” Annual Bass Tournament was held Saturday, June 16, with 21 teams participating this year. The bass fishing and the weather were awesome this year, showing that the bass population in the Fulton Chain is tremendous.

The winners this year are:

First place, with a total catch of five bass, weighing in at 16 lbs. 6 oz., were Anthony Sege and Donald (Ringer) Wyman, Woodgate.

Second place, with a total of five bass, weighing in at 14 lbs. 10 oz., were Richard Tehan and Erik Ashley of Marcy.

Third place, with a total catch of five bass, weighing in at 14 lbs. 7 oz., were Lonnie and Billie Castor of Redfield.

The largest bass caught weighed 5 lbs. 1.2 oz. and was 20 1/4 inches long by Erik Ashley and Richard Tehan of Marcy.

The largest northern pike caught weighed in at 4 lbs. 14 oz. by George and Pam Winn of New Hartford.

The Old  Forge Fire Department would like to commend all the participants this year as over 100 bass and 15 northern pike were brought to the weigh station and all were released back into the water with the exception of one fish, that is true sportsmanship by all.

The Old Forge Fire Department would also like to thank the many local businesses that contributed door prizes for this years event, especially D & D Sports, in New York Mills, Richard Nelson and Wilderness Interiors for donating some awesome prizes for the raffles.

The winners of those prizes were:

Joe Van Valkenburg, Old Forge, winner of the spinning rod and reel set.

George Winn, New Hartford, winner of the bear statue.

Dean Couchman, Middleville, winner of custom made spinning rod.

The 2013 Bass Tournament is scheduled for June 15, and we  have a goal of at least 25 teams participating, so spread the word. All profits  made during the tournament go to the Old Forge Fire Department Rescue Fund.

On a side note, two of our local fishermen, for the second year in a row have brought the winning fish (so they say) to the navigation dock to be weighed in and each time their winning fish has escaped back into the water during the transfer from their boat to the weighing station. The committee is thinking about a new prize category for next year to cover this circumstance.

The tournament was a success and everyone had a great time this year and is so looking forward to 2013.

Inlet team wins against Speculator

Matt’s Hot Screamers won a tough battle that lasted ten innings against a very good Speculator squad. With the score tied at four going into the seventh inning, Crystal LaPorte got things going with her third hit of the game. She was followed by Karen Hoskins’ third hit. After two outs were made, Katlyn Payne came thru with a clutch RBI to put the Screamers ahead 5-4.

It didn’t last long as Speculator scored in the bottom of the inning to tie and almost won, but a play at the plate was made by Sam Luce to save the game and send it into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Misty McGough led off with a triple to left field and was followed by Kaitlyn Payne’s RBI single to put the Screamers ahead.

Payne later scored on an infield hit by Gordi Christadaro to put the team ahead by two. Kyle Hauser pitched a great game and shut down Speculator in the bottom of the tenth to secure the victory by the final score of 7-5. Hauser also scored twice, with Heather Levi getting two big hits and an RBI. Karen Hoskins lead the team with a four hit game. Defensively, the team was led by a very nice double play started by Emily Wilton and solid outfield play led by Denise Payne.

The victory improves the teams record to 2-0.
