Kirkwood golf tournament coming

The Kinderwood Program is hosting their golf tournament at the Thendara Golf Course on Wednesday, Aug. 1. It’s the third time the program is hosting this event since the  move of their venue to the View Arts Center. The Kinderwood organization also does other fundraisers throughout the year, but this is one of their biggest.

“We felt that a golf tournament was a fun, outdoor activity that could be used to raise a little more money than some of our other fundraisers do,” said Diane Heroux, the director of the Kinderwood organization.

What started out as a simple fundraiser for housing turned into a great chance to also help out Kinderwood students. Diane commented on how the tournament contributes.

“The funds raised are used to help off set some of the expenses that we have and as scholarships for families who may not be able to pay tuition,” she said.

The first year of the golf tournament was very successful, even for participants who didn’t have a knack for playing golf. Along with the tournament is an auction and dinner to take part in.

“For people who may not play golf, we welcome them to join us for dinner and entertainment,” said Diane. “There is a silent auction and a live auction. Some of the items auctioned are original art works.”

Not unexpected by a program involved with its home in View. So many opportunities take place at the tournament to help Kinderwood’s staff and students keep going. Kinderwood is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations to work. The golf tournament uses its profits to help those who may not be able to afford the program.

“It’s a really cool thing to give back to the kids,” said Sharon Finkle-Kleps, one of the program’s hosts who’s been involved in all three tournaments.  “The money is for the kids.”

Registration is finalized at noon on Aug. 1, for single players or groups. Parents and kids alike sign up today and come have some fun in the sun while showing your support of the Kinderwood mission to educate the future generation of the Adirondacks.

Inlet softball tops Raquette Lake

Matt’s Hot Screamers scored runs in all but one inning to help lead them to victory over their rivals from Raquette Lake by the score of 13-7.

Heather Levi hit a double and was the first run to score with consecutive singles from Dede Ste.Marie and Misty McGough. Karen Hoskins knocked in the second score with a deep fly ball to the left.

Raquette Lake scored four runs in the second to take the lead for a short time. Crystal LaPorte started the second for the home team with a single. With two outs made, Sam Luce hit safely, followed by Denise Payne, Kylie Hauser, Levi, and a double by Ste. Marie to cap off a five run rally.

Katlyn Payne doubled to lead off the third, followed by Hoskins’s single and a sac fly from LaPorte to score Payne. Jen Hitchcock, Gordi Christodaro and Luce all came through with hits to score four runs and a seven run lead. The defense was lead by Emily Wilton’s stellar play at third base and an awesome over the shoulder running catch by shortstop Kylie Hauser.

Every player made good plays and the team showed good balance with every player hitting well. Dede Ste. Marie handled the pitching duties and reached base three of four times and was matched by Heather Levi’s three hit game.

The victory gives home field advantage for the first playoff game scheduled to be played Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Arrowhead Park. Game time is 6:30.
