Girls modified soccer

The girls modified soccer team closed out their season of play with games at Oriskany and at home against Poland.

At Oriskany last Wednesday, Oct. 19, the team won their eighth game of the season with a 3-0 victory. Holly Kalil led the offense with two goals and the other was scored by Chloe Barkauskas. Madison Rice and Melissa Rockhill shared the goaltending duties and each one had some excellent saves to preserve the shutout.

On defense, Chloe Brosemer and Ally Cooper anchored the defense from their sweeper position.

Friday, Oct. 21, their last game of the season was played against Poland, a team that had inflicted the only loss on them—a 1-0 loss. It happened again, as Poland played very well and escaped with another 1-0 victory. It was the third time that these two teams met this year with Old Forge winning the other game. There was not much difference between these two fine teams.

With that week of play, the team finished their season with an impressive 8-2 record under their first year coach, Joanna Cloherty. Congratulations to the entire team and Cloherty for an excellent season.

Cross country

The cross country running teams took part in the annual Adirondack Cross Country Invitational last Saturday, Oct. 29. The meet brought in its usual flock of schools who use this meet as a prep meet for the upcoming Sectionals this weekend.

Split into two divisions, Old Forge competed in the Varsity II division with its varsity and modified teams.

In the boys varsity II division, the Old Forge team had a complete team but none of the participants faired too well. Lance Frymire was the first Eskimo to cross the finish line and he was far back in 94th position. Hunter Lawrence was next in 97th, Adam Winslow was 99th, Connor Glasser was 115th, Josh Matteson was 119th, Griffin Kleps was 123rd and Will Johnson was 129th. As a team, they came in 11th out of 11 counting teams with three teams having incomplete teams.

In the boys varsity I division, Holland Patent never missed a beat from last year’s fine showing and, once again, won the meet. Former Town of Webb School graduate, Mike Stripp, is the coach of that team.

The girls varsity team had only one girl take part in the race as Morgan Payne placed 60th in that race.

The boys modified team had only two boys take part and both did very well. Westley Lamphear placed 16th overall and Henry Uzdavinis was close behind in 20th.

The girls modified team had the best showing of the day for Old Forge as they were led by the fine fifth place finish from Chloe Barkauskas. Holly Kalil was the next Old Forge girl to finish in 27th, Allie Evans was 28th, Melissa Rockhill was 47th, Maggie Queen was 49th, Robin Smith, 60th and Mara Gaffney was 63rd.
