Fall sports awards handed out

The varsity club served as the host student organization for the Fall Sports Awards given at the Town of Webb School Gymnasium last Monday, Nov. 7.

Ron Smith, coach of the cross country teams, spoke about his teams accomplishments during the season. One person, Maddie Phaneuf, made the all-star team and also qualified for the state championships held at Verona on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Robert Fountain, second year coach of the girls’ junior varsity soccer, team handed out his individual awards after proudly going over his teams winning year with a 6-5-3 record. Sara Carnell was named as the “will to win” athlete and Shelby Egnaczyk was named the team’s MVP.

Travis Kiefer, new head coach of the boys’ junior varsity team, also had a winning record as his team ended the season with a 7-6-2 record. With 17 goals scored this season, Dane Daiker was named the offensive MVP. Cy Barkauskas was voted as the team MVP.

Dave Leach, coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team, had nice things to say about his team even in a losing year. His team proved to be a far better team than their 3-10-3 record would indicate. Jessica Hannah, a standout on defense at her important sweeper position, was the lone first team all-star and was also chosen by the team as their MVP. Daria Orekhov and Maddie Phaneuf were picked to the honorable mention team. Orekhov was the high scorer on the team with eight goals scored with three girls, Katie Connell, Lauren Holt and Phaneuf each scoring five goals to tie for second.

John “Louie” Ehrensbeck had much to say about his team as they had just won the D-2 portion of Class D Championship. By team vote, Kevin Kress was selected as the team’s MVP. Kress was the leading scorer on the team with 16 goals and 6 assists, and he led them to a final record of 11-7-1. Another senior, Connor Rockhill, was the leading assist man on the team with 10 assists to go along with six goals scored. Sam Waterbury ended the season with 12 goals and four assists. The all-stars have not been chosen for boys soccer and when they do, I will report the result.
