Sports Reports by Dave Clark

Winter sports rosters

With the girls’ varsity basketball team roster already given, the rest of the high school coaches now have their rosters complete. These are the rosters that each coach begins the season with and are subject to change during the season.

John Leach is back again to coach the cross country ski teams. Leach has the following boys and girls on his team: Megan Greene, Olivia Phaneuf, Allyson Brosemer, Maddie Phaneuf, Andrea Frey, Jessica Hannah, Taylor Payne, Henry Uzdavinis, Evan Nahor, Tecwyn Williams, Colin Criss, and Adam Lubin. Lubin is a student at Nottingham and is approved by Section III to ski for the Town of Webb Schools this year.

Tom Down will continue to coach the Alpine ski team this year with hopes of having another successful season. Down has the following boys and girls on his team: Mara Gaffney, Maggie Queen, Briana Brownsell, Mackenzie Kelly, Camry Liddle, Danielle Gibbs, Lexie Haehl, Lauren Holt, Jessica Hannah, McKenzie Liddle, Cy Barkauskas, Carter Lawrence, John Gaffney, Connor Glasser, Adam Levi, Corey Down, Griffin Kleps, Hunter Lawrence, Adam Winslow, West Tickner and Daniel Heroux.

Andrew Kalil is the returning coach for the boys junior varsity basketball team. Kalil has the following boys on his team: Cameron Lenci, Dane Daiker, Will Johnson, Victor Pedraza, Thomas Lindsay, Hansen Schmid, Andrew Slegaitis and Tyler McGough.

Returning coach, Nate Smith, will have the following boys on his varsity basketball team: Dakota Earl, Lance Frymire, Greg Hunkins, Matt Kratzenberg, Ethan Kress, Sam Waterbury, Kenny Pastore, Calvin Risley and Parker Clemans.

Kristin Armendola, no stranger to coaching girls volleyball, will take over the coaching duties for the girls’ junior varsity volleyball team. Armendola will start the season with the following girls: Lexie LaFountain, Amber Midgley, Kalyn Olney, Lindsay Payne, Nichole Radpath, Sara Carnell, Sara Dempsey, Shelby Egnaczyk and Kennedy Scott.

Jessica Brownsell returns as the girls’ varsity volleyball coach and has the following girls on her team: Jordan Levi, Morgan Payne, Chelsea Balcom, Sarah Branch, Daria Orekhov, Mallory Kleps, Alex Levi and Jessica Menges.

In addition, three senior boys will be taking part with the West Canada team in indoor track. When it comes to scoring, the boys will score as a team for Old Forge. The three boys are Trevor Godemann, Kevin Kress and Connor Rockhill.

With so many sports teams offered and with a declining enrollment, it is absolutely amazing that this school can come up with as many teams as they do. To compete well will be the hard part as both the volleyball teams and the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have very difficult schedules. Basketball, especially, is the most competitive sport played. They also do the same thing in the spring. Whatever they do, they should try their best and enjoy the action.

Last week in the girls’ varsity basketball writeup, I gave the roster and said the Haley Josephson was the only senior on the team. I should have said that she is the only girl on the team who has had some varsity playing experience.  That was way back in her eighth grade year. Josephson is not the only senior on the team, Elizabeth Getty is also a senior. Sorry for the careless error.

Modified girls’ volleyball

The girls’ modified volleyball team hosted Adirondack last Saturday, Nov. 19 and made a good account for themselves in both the B and A games.

The B team lost to Adirondack by the close scores of 25-23 and 25-20 but they showed some fine playing, especially in their serving. For such young girls with little or no experience playing volleyball, they did an excellent job of putting the ball into play.  Everyone on the team played and contributed something positive for their team.  Chelby Simpson, Chloe Brosemer and Melanie Levi all played well with some fine returns and they got some good serving from many of the team including some from Mickayla Abrial.

The entire A team played very well as they pulled off an upset victory over Adirondack.  I say upset only because it is not expected that Old Forge will defeat a much larger school but they did.

You will have a chance to see both of these teams play today, Nov. 29, as they host New York Mills. The B game will start at 5:30.
