Looking for History in the Town of Martinsburg

Thursday, April 05, 2012 - Updated: 2:27 PM

Over the last couple of years I have asked for your help in gathering information about the Town of Martinsburg and this is most likely my last request.

At present we, both Lewis County Historical Society and Martinsburg Historical Society are looking for aerial photographs of farms.   LCHS is looking for all of Lewis County and MHS are looking for Town of Martinsburg.

Many local and previous residents have come and talked with me and they all have very interesting stories to tell and if you would like to join in with your story please come to the Wm. H. Bush Memorial Library, Mon., Fri., 1:30- 5:30, &-9pm,-Wed.,10am-12,1:30-5:30, 7-9pm,or Sat.10 to 1pm, 315-376-7490 or to the Old Town Hall (New Town Historian Office) on Thurs. 1-4pm.  Also you may call me at 315-376-0156.

Many of my conversation started with I don’t have any interesting to talk about and then they start talking about going to school, walking with Anna G. to school and back at lunch time and at the end of the day, fires, and different events.  All you have to do is start talking and the story comes out.  So please come and tell me your story.

Did you know that when Walter Martin bought 8000 acres of land he was to buy the land for a group from Mass., but instead he went to James Constable, agent for William Constable, in New York City and purchased the land for himself?   Martin put $6000, down and mortgaged the rest.   Over the years he paid interest and very little of the balance.  When he died the mortgage came due and it put a major strain on the family and the bank he set up for his son Charles.
