Letters to the Editor - 01/10/2012

Note to all sportsmen

To the editor,

Remember:. Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum are all anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment. All have supported gun control and abolishing our Second Amendment rights. Reject them all.

Don Sage,

Paradox

In response to rails

To the Editor:

In response to Doug Ralston’s, “Rail trail on the way?”; well maybe in someone else’s lifetime, but certainly not any time soon.

A few select people have been blowing a lot of hot air about ripping up the rails on the rail bed that runs from Utica to Lake Placid for years now and they still haven’t gotten it. The railroad has not been abandoned and is still owned by New York State Department of Transportation, which they lease to the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Do these people not read the papers and see all the events and schedules of the trains that take place throughout the year from the station in Utica to the station in Thendara and the scenic runs between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid?

This past fall I went online to the THEARTA.org site and was pleased to see so many people who were so against the idea of destroying a historic, operating rail line that many people who are members of rail-to-trail clubs stated they would resign membership if it involved ripping up the rails of the Adirondack Railway or any currently operated rail line as this is not the mission of rail-to-trail clubs, their mission is to convert abandoned railways: key word: abandoned.

Furthermore, some postings brought up the fact that if such a trail system was ever to take place that putting a wilderness trail label on it, you instantly lose use of it to snowmobilers and four-wheelers, as they are not allowed in wilderness areas of New York State. So once that is done, just how much money will this rail-to-trail corridor bring to local economies?

It boils down to a few locals who hate trains and the thought of outsiders having access to the entire length of the Adirondacks through which the railroad runs.

In my opinion the THEARTA.org is just a means of misinforming people who are not familiar with the area, who have not done research on the Adirondack Railroad corridor. They purposely spread misinformation and propaganda to make their cause look good. People like that are called Nature Nazis, because they oppose nature and hate all it has to offer. So they do their best to try to keep as  many people away and deny access any way they can get away with. Example: how many area of state land actually have state land signs displayed? Nature Nazis rip them down and in some cases even post it with private property signs. So don’t be fooled by all the propaganda, there’s not a rail-trail on the way any time soon.

Renita Smith,

Forestport

Title: "A Few Locals Nazis Who Hate Trains"

I am not a "local" (if one defines local as within the blue line), I do not "hate trains" and I am all for removing the tracks and replacing them with a trail. Renita Smith does NOT speak for me and her comments show her ignorance on this subject. Worse yet, her references to NAZIS do not deserve publication and shame on the Adirondack Express for spreading this hate speech.

I am a New Yorker and I think trains have their place - that is when they serve the people. This train is no more than a failed tourist attraction funded by my tax dollars. A trail is far more suitable to the Adirondack setting than a smoke belching tourist train will ever be and it won't drain public funds. Anyone interested in the facts can do their own research - it's obvious Renita Smith cares little about facts and more about enraging the public debate with bigoted hate speech and out right lies.
