CAP-21 thanks people who helped with flower baskets

The Hanging Flower Basket Program was once again a great success this year! There were nearly 300 baskets planted, watered and hung in the Towns of Forestport and Webb as well as in the hamlets of Big Moose and Stillwater. CAP-21 would like to thank all those individuals and businesses who have recently donated: Barbara and Doug Criss, Marcia and David Barker, Miriam Kashiwa, Sarah and Paul Morin, Nancy Cannon, Peg and Doug Masters, View, Ace Hardware Old Forge Department Store, ARO River Outfitters, Billy’s Restaurant, BJ Queen Enterprises, Brooker Lumber, Country Club Motel, Don’s Polaris, Frankie’s Taste of Italy, Hunkins Excavating Corporation, Moose River Trading Company, Old Forge Sport Tours, Ozzie’s Coffee Bar, Slickers, Smith Marine, Steak House, The Weekly Adirondack, Thendara Automotive, Timm Associates, Van Aukens Inne, Walt’s Diner, Wilderness Interiors, Wrap City N’ Glue.

CAP-21 would also like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who spent a lot of their summer watering each one of the beautiful baskets throughout the Route 28 Corridor and hamlets. On Wednesday, Sept. 28, we invited them to a thank you party held at Van Aukens Inne in Thendara. A great time was held by all.

In addition, we all want to thank Fred Trimbach for his never-ending enthusiasm to the Flower Basket Program. Without his tireless dedication, we could not be starting our Fourteenth Season next year. Great job everyone and thank you to all the volunteers who keep this program going each year.

If you have not made your donation yet and/or would like to support this beautification effort, your donations, renewals and memorials are always welcome. The easiest way to support the Hanging Flower Basket Program is on line at www.cap-21.org or contact us at (315) 369-3353 or by email at info@cap-21.org or donations can be mailed to:   CAP-21 Hanging Flower Basket, P.O. Thanks to kindness of strangers

The week of Sept. 18, my husband Rick and I were vacationing in the beautiful Seventh Lake region and staying at Deer Meadows at Inlet. Even though it had been raining while we there we were still enjoying all of the beautiful scenery and fall colors. Sunday the 25th was to be our last day in the area before starting home on Monday.

It was suggested to us to go to McCauley Mountain and get a view of the area from atop that mountain.

We took that advice, the views, the spectacular colors, the glistening waters were all absolutely beautiful. After about an hour we were ready to head back down the mountain. I remarked to my husband that I must really be out of shape because I was really tired. He suggested we sit down at a nearby picnic table and rest for a few minutes as soon as I sat down I passed out.

Frantically my husband began trying to revive me but I was very slow in coming around. In the meantime one of the men tending to chair lift asked if we needed help and my husband responded yes.

We were immediately surrounded by people wanting to help. At this point I became very nauseated and vomited several times but through all of that many people were trying to help. Among those helping was a young woman who cradled me in her arms and offered soothing words of encouragement and physical comfort at the same time.911 was called and we knew an ambulance was waiting at the foot of the mountain to get me to a hospital. After some time a four-wheel drive pick-up managed to makes its way to the top of the mountain and get me to the waiting ambulance.

I was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica where I spent the night. I was released the next afternoon and on Tuesday we headed back to our home in Ohio and a relieved family.

There are so many people to thank and we don’t know a single name, but to the young woman who took me in her arms and later told my husband she was a nurse “thank you,” to the lady EMT from Old Forge who managed to make her way up to me “thank you,” to the Old Forge Firefighter who took our car and parked it at the fire house “thank you,” to the ambulance crew from Old Forge “thank you,” to the young man who drove the pickup to come and get me “thank you,”and, finally, to our friend Cherie Landl who drove from Inlet to Utica to be with us “thank you.”

My hope is that none of you ever have to face a situation like this but if you do I hope you are fortunate enough to be surrounded by caring strangers as we were.

Thank you all,

Mickey and Rick Poore,

Sidney, Ohio
