Letter to the Editor

Rail trail on the way?

To the editor:

Some exciting news is coming our way here in the southern Adirondacks.

A coalition has been formed in the Saranac-Placid region to turn the existing railroad right of way into a rail trail from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake with thoughts to extend it to Old Forge.

The coalition is asking all persons interested to join THEARTA.org. The possibilities of a 135 mile all purpose trail through the heart of the Adirondacks are endless. It will open up the back country to hikers, cyclists and snowmobilers.

It seems like a win-win use of this vast resource. There are very few rail-trails of this length in the country and only one or two that traverse the wild, backwoods. This is a unique opportunity because the trail has just enough access points to make it useable and few enough to make it a real adventure.

It will certainly bring about some economic growth in the Old Forge area as a trailhead endpoint, a jumping-off spot so to speak. I encourage anyone interested to log on and join.

Stay up to date on this important opportunity.

Doug Ralston,

Big Moose

Title:

Thinking I would be directed to another link, I accidentally clicked on "recommend," increasing the number of those seemingly recommending this letter. Ironically, I am very much against rail removal and would certainly not "recommend" anyone joing THEARTA. I am highly skeptical of the economic prosperity predicted by those in favor of the rails to trails. Has anyone taken a close look at the American public? Or read any one of the many articles about the inactivity and obesity of our youth? Although personally extremely active, I know very few people who routinely hike or bike 10 or more miles. Those that do, often are searching for "new" routes and adventures, therey eliminating the potential for repeat users. Riding a railroad through the heart of the Adirondacks, however, is unique (unlike another trail) and can be enjoyed by the young, elderly, disabled and healthy alike.

The Rail Trail could be accessable to Snowmobiles now adding to Old Forge's extensive system. As soon as the snow melts in the spring the bicycles would come in numbers to rival the snowmobiling and shortening our off season.
