KATHY QUEEN
Kathy Queen has lived in Inlet for 11 years. She and her family moved to Inlet from Pennsylvania. They had owned a camp in Eagle Bay and thought this would be a nice area to raise their children. Queen has two children: Ryan is a freshman at the Town of Webb Union Free School District and Maggie is in fourth grade and attends the Inlet Common School. Queen volunteers for various organizations and teaches yoga at the Arts Center/Old Forge.
Why do you want to be on the school board?
I am running for re-election to the Inlet Common School Board of Education because I believe that the school is an integral part of the community and of the Town of Inlet. Also, because I would like to have input in decisions that affect my child’s education. I hope to continue to serve the taxpayers, students and staff as a member of the school board.
What experience do you have?
I have been an Inlet School Board trustee for about 8 years. Initially, I was appointed by the BOE to serve out the remainder of a vacated trustee position. I was then elected to serve two three-year terms. I became president of the BOE two years ago when John Levi, Jr., moved from the district after having served on the board for more than seventeen years. John was very dedicated to his service of the BOE and I learned much from working with him.
What do you think is the most important function of a school board member?
The most important function of a school board member is to ensure that the taxpayer’s money is being spent conscientiously to provide the best possible education for our students.
What do you think is the most important issue facing the school today?
The most important issue facing the Inlet Common School today is the challenge to best use the funds raised through school taxes to stay current with state and national educational standards while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment. My fellow board members and I hope to use local resources to develop programs that will enrich our students and increase their involvement our community. J
