Girls varsity softball
The girls' varsity softball team played one league game and two non-league games this past week.
Monday, May 6, they played their last league game of the season hosting Rome Catholic. Guess what? The team won their first game of the year in an exciting 16-13 victory.
The game started poorly for the team as they gave up six runs to Rome in the first inning. However, they did not play like a team that has not won a game this year and they played ...

Varsity golf
The varsity golf team had a great week of action as they placed themselves right back into first place after having lost to West Canada the week before.
The Northern League seems to be a close race between West Canada, Remsen and Old Forge with Adirondack playing the spoiler role. Old Forge did not suffer a loss this past week and one of those victories was over Remsen. While that was going on, West Canada lost two matches to Adirondack and to Remsen to slip down to t ...

Boys varsity track
The boys varsity track team got their season started this past week and the poor weather conditions and two-week spring break affected them just like most of the other teams.
Monday, April 15, they opened at New York Mills with Living Word Academy also competing. These three teams were the top three teams in the section last year and the meet was very competitive. This time, however, Old Forge did not win as the Mills defeated both teams with Living Word toppin ...

A combination of school spring breaks and foul weather conditions have cut into the first week of inter-school athletics for the Town of Webb Schools. Both the baseball and softball teams had to have both of their games postponed due to the bad weather and poor field conditions. Also, many area schools were taking their one-week break during this past week.
Last Wednesday, April 10, the two teams were to open their schedule in a non-league game at Johnsburg. However, the field at ...

New York State Public High School Athletic Association
With no athletic contests this past week, I thought it would be the perfect time to explain how New York runs its high school athletic programs. Many people have asked me how it is organized and what does it mean when I mention Section III as opposed to Center State Conference. Hopefully, I can clear that up in this article.
New York State is divided into 11 sections for its athletics. For example, Section II is in the Capital ...

The weekend of February 9-10, 2013 Kerissa and Dawson Dunn participated at the New England Bill Koch Festival with 300 other nordic skiers and their families. The Dunns and Coach Phaneuf headed over to Boston ahead of the winter storm, arrived in plenty of time to experience a Boston blizzard and a travel ban for 24 hours! Once the travel ban was lifted the festival began, all events took place on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Weston Ski And Track Club in Weston, Mass.
The first race of the day was a s ...

Criss and Tickner win Sportsmanship Awards
Last Tuesday, Feb. 26, two members of the Town of Webb Schools received an additional award. That award, the Sportsmanship Award, is given to one girl and one boy from every section that competed in skiing at the states. From Section III, the boys' winner from the nordic team was Colin Criss. The winner from the alpine team was West Tickner.
I personally feel that this is an important award at a time when we see such boorish behavior f ...
Cross country wins Section III title
To no one’s surprise, the cross country ski teams won the relay portion of the Section III Championships and with it, they captured the Section III Title at Osceola last Friday, Feb. 15.
After winning the distance race on Wednesday, they only needed a fair outing to win, however, it was a most convincing romp over their over-matched opponents.
The boys’ team of Colin Criss, Adam Luban and Eric Houck placed first by nearl ...
Girls varsity basketball
After nearly two weeks of no games, the girls varsity basketball team finally got their game in at Madison which was played last Monday, Feb. 11.
After having shown much improved play over the season, the team played this game the way they opened the season—not too good. They never seriously threatened Madison in losing 47-31.
Sam Notley had two good scoring nights this year and both of them came against Madison. Notley led her team with 11 points an ...
Boys modified basketball
The boys’ modified basketball team played only one game this past week against Oriskany and had their home game against Camden postponed due to the bad weather conditions on Friday, Feb. 8.
Tuesday, Feb. 5, the team hosted a good and very large Oriskany team. Instead of playing two full games, they decided to play five periods with the A teams and B teams playing an equal time. The score on the board was the running score of the results of both teams, but i ...
Alpine skiing
Saturday, Jan. 26, the Alpine ski teams took part in a Section III ski meet held at Snow Ridge and was hosted by Lowville. I received conflicting answers to the skill contested that day, but it seems that it was the giant slalom. Two runs were held and when it was over, Old Forge had themselves two victories.
In the girls’ race, Madeline Mahoney was second, Lauren Holt was third, Lexie Haehl was eighth, Briana Brownsell was tenth and Maggie Queen was 12th.
Of the 21 skiers c ...
Cross country skiing
The cross country ski teams had two meets recently with some fine results.
Friday, Jan. 18, the meet held at Osceola was freestyle with a mass start. The boys ran a 7.5k race and the girls a 5k race. This was a section III race and there were over 40 racers for each division.
In the boys’ race, Adam Luban took first place with Colin Criss placing third and Erik Houck placing fifth for a team winning total of nine points. In addition, Henry Uzdavinis was ...

Boys junior varsity basketball
The boys’ junior varsity basketball team played two games recently and were very competitive in both games.
Thursday, Jan. 3, they played at Rome Catholic and lost a heartbreaker to their hosts, 36-34.
The team got off to a very slow start and dug themselves a hole that they could not quite crawl out of. They scored only two points in the first quarter and eventually found themselves behind 32-22 after three quarters of play. At that time, they began ...
Boys varsity basketball
The boys’ varsity basketball team played one league game this past week at Rome Catholic on Thursday, Jan. 3.
Rome Catholic rolled to an impressive first half lead and coasted to an easy victory over the short-handed Webb team. Old Forge did come back and play better ball in the second half and actually outscored Rome by one point, but it was too little, too late. It was not as if Rome played only their second and third string players in that half because they onl ...

Boys varsity basketball
The boys’ varsity basketball team had high hopes of winning their first game of the season at home against Remsen last Tuesday, Dec. 18, but they did not count on starting a team with three key starters missing from the lineup.
The starters who did play had a terrible time trying to get anything going. At one time in the second quarter, the score was 16-1 in favor of the Rams. Not only did Old Forge not have a field goal at that time, they only had about three atte ...
Webb students receive scholar athlete awards
The Town of Webb School was a recent recipient of several NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Awards for the fall sports season. New York State made a change for this year by presenting a team with a GPA of 95 percent or higher a lapel pin and school certificate, as in the past. If a team’s GPA is 90 percent to 94.99 percent, it will receive a certificate for the school and each student-athlete listed on the application.

The high school volleyball teams have been in training for over a week and the two squads are just about set.
