Girls varsity softball
The girls' varsity softball team played one league game and two non-league games this past week.
Monday, May 6, they played their last league game of the season hosting Rome Catholic. Guess what? The team won their first game of the year in an exciting 16-13 victory.
The game started poorly for the team as they gave up six runs to Rome in the first inning. However, they did not play like a team that has not won a game this year and they played ...

Varsity golf
The varsity golf team had a great week of action as they placed themselves right back into first place after having lost to West Canada the week before.
The Northern League seems to be a close race between West Canada, Remsen and Old Forge with Adirondack playing the spoiler role. Old Forge did not suffer a loss this past week and one of those victories was over Remsen. While that was going on, West Canada lost two matches to Adirondack and to Remsen to slip down to t ...

A long story short

by Mart Allen
Good news and bad news
The first thing I do every morning is turn on the news. Before he died early this year my best friend Morgan Roderick and I compared notes on the passing scene at least once a week. You see we both came from the old school and never ceased to be bummed out by the direction we saw the country headed in. One of our favorite analogies was to compare our versions of current mores with those of our respective parents. I shudder to think that if the trend continues ...

No more, no less

Bugged
And so POOF! All of the sudden it is spring and it's springing all over the darn place. My itchy eyes and drippy nose tell me that the pollen is on the loose. I happily blow my nose and dab my eyes. Every year I stand in my yard and survey the feet upon feet of snow and become convinced that the world will never, ever be green again. It seems like it will never melt, like it's an impossible feat and yet one day it is gone. I remarked just yesterday that the bugs hadn't been ...

Eye on invasives

by Hilary Smith

Partners "pull" together to fight invasive species
Most people eagerly await the arrival of spring. I do, too, although it is typically short-lived and comes with mixed emotions. As the ice melts, I am always excited to get out on the water, though, upon seeing the first anglers and boaters of the season, I wonder, "Did they clean their gear?" The joy of seeing plants come back to life in my garden is often fleeting, too. I remember, just as desired plants begin to grow, so too ...

In the outdoors

Stubborn May gobblers
If you're lucky in the spring turkey woods, you've done your homework, located a roost, arrive at dawn, set up close by, and after fly down, thrown out a few clucks and yelps and bang, another bird in the freezer. Yes, I've had it happen this way, but not very often.
Many times the big gobbler hangs up just out of range, tending to his lady friends. Here are a few tips that might just bring him in:
Remain patient and vigilant, don't give up and the worst th ...

Niccolls Women thank community

The Women's Fellowship of Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church thanks all those who donated items for the Church World Service (CWS) Hygiene Kits. CWS distributes these in cases of natural disasters, violence, or grinding poverty anywhere in the world.
Fifty-four complete kits have been sent in from Old Forge, and these can mean the difference between sickness and health in time of disaster or great need.
Thank you for helping.

Organizers thank community volunteers

A huge thank you must go out to everyone who participated in the CAA's regional Community Pride Day. On May 1, well over 800 volunteers, students and teachers were out and about cleaning up the streets in Thendara, Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Big Moose, Inlet, Raquette Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake and Indian Lake. You may have noticed them if you drove through on the day. In fact, you could not have missed them. They all wore safety green t-shirts made possible by donations from 85 businesses w ...

Couple thanks volunteers

We wish to sincerely thank Old Forge and Otter Lake Fire Departments and EMS for their response to our Adirondack lean-to and two acre fire at Tamarack Lake on Saturday, May 4.
In addition, assistance from DEC Officers Chad Richardson and Adam Pickett was very much appreciated. Of course, we cannot forget the timeliness and support received from mom (Geraldine Brodock) and Scott Liddle.
We recognize how fortunate we are that our home is still standing and for the opportunity we have to live in ...

WPOA recommends a yes vote on school budget

To the editor
The officers and members of the Webb Property Owners Association have followed the 2013-2014 draft proposed TOW school budget to its conclusion. We appreciate the availability of information and the superintendent's time explaining it to us. Having attended the school board meetings during the budget process, I can say it was a very open process.
The TOW school district's proposed second draft budget proposed a tax levy that would have resulted in a tax increase of greater than 8 p ...
