The boys’ and girls’ alpine ski teams both won the Section III Championship held over a two-day competition at Song Mountain Feb. 14 and 15. The only surprise was the fact  that the girls took charge early and kept it up to defeat Holland Patent who had pushed them during the season. The boys, who dominated the other four Section III teams all year, had a surprisingly tough time of it against their closest competitor, Holland Patent.  ...

Market hunters
by Mart Allen

There was a time when market hunting flourished in this country. It ended, thankfully before too many other than the passenger pigeon became extinct. I was brought up in a household with my great-grandfather who was born in 1844 and died on Nov. 11, 1942. He told me all about the demise of the passenger pigeon long before I could read well enough to learn that fact on my own. It was a personal account from someone who witnessed the tragedy first hand.
He was born in Adrian, Michigan moved to Ma ...

Down Memory Lane
by Mart Allen

Did you ever have one of those days when you woke up early and refreshed then just laid in bed relaxed while your mind wandered? I did this morning and I got so charged up I had to get up and get going. As usual my thoughts were on things that happened many years ago and the way things and people were when I came to the area in 1958.
I arrived here literally with stars in my eyes in December in spite of the bitter cold and snow that welcomed me. I was about to fulfill my life’s dream of fo ...

I tawt I taw a puddy tat
by Stan Ernst

DEC Wildlife Biologists are asking me (and you) to comment on their proposal to extend the aboriginal bobcat hunting and trapping seasons. I informed them that I’ve hunted small game in numerous states and as a yoot learned trapping techniques from NYS trappers Si Barrett and George White at the notorious Raquette Lake Boys Conservation Gulag. I went on to claim that I’ve matured and no longer support offing wildlife for any reason other than food and home invasion. I do condone the ...

Desk dreams
by Megan Ulrich

My desk is a disaster zone. There, I’ve admitted it. It’s on paper, it’s documented, there’s no turning back. It has mountains of paper, stacks of receipts, and at least a hundred notes to my very own self. If I knew the location of these notes, perhaps I would answer myself. I’m not a timely correspondent with me, myself or I, unfortunately. I blame my writer’s brain, my creative ways, my tendency to pile things ... though the real talent I’m exhibiting ...

Venetz and Phaneuf plan benefit walk

To the editor:
For nearly 200 years there has been a school in central Vermont which has educated eager young men and women of extraordinary caliber, and while doing so enhanced their potential as outstanding citizens or soldiers in a world in which they are very much a part of. The man who founded this school, Norwich University, had a vision in the early 1800s which involved an intense lifestyle of physical fitness, challenging academics, and moral charact ...
