Ski club thanks helpers and challenges non-profits

The Polar Bear Ski Club held its annual Tent Sale on June 4. The members all decided that this year the proceeds would be given to Bob and Helen at the Strand Theatre to be put towards the money that they need to enable them to go digital. We all felt that with all that they have done to support us over the years, it was time to support them and show them how much they are appreciated.
We raised just over $2,600 during our one day event. This amount will be matched by the Central Adirondack Asso ...

Boys modified baseball
The boys' modified baseball team ended their season with two close losses at home against Poland and Remsen. Monday, May 20, the team lost to Poland 4-0 in a game in which the Poland pitcher had complete control of the game. The Old Forge bats simply had trouble connecting with the ball as most of the outs were by strike outs. Waddie Kalil was the only hitter who could get a hit breaking up the potential no hitter by the Poland pitcher. Old Fo ...

The Reverend Frank Reed

Any conversation about the history and heritage of religion in the Adirondacks must include the name of the Reverend Frank Reed, considered by many to be one of the most respected and admired clergymen, whose influence was felt here from 1914, when his work began, until his death in 1980.
Born on a farm near Campbell in Steuben County in 1895, Reed learned wood cutting skills with a bucksaw and axe doing his daily chores until he turned 20. He was a young man with a limited education, but nevert ...

Home grown attractions
Have you ever thought about home grown attractions? I have and it never ceases to amaze me how local people often times take them for granted. Maybe it's not so much that they are taken for granted but that it takes time to really appreciate such things and time is a precious commodity. In the workaday world locals pass by what others travel miles, spend days and pay to experience, without ever noticing what they are missing. Time is the key component in thi ...

’Tis the season
by Mart Allen

We are attuned to the seasons. We are at the cusp of my favorite. It was not always so when I was younger, I had no favorite. They all held promise for me. They all brought something that I would have hated to do without. Today at my age that is no longer the case. I tolerate winter but could get along without it. You may then ask, why not do what many of my generation do, and head for warmer climes at its onset? The answer is because home is where the heart is. This is my home. I have had to gi ...
